Myopia Control:
Myopia (nearsightedness) is the inability to focus clearly on objects in the distance.
What causes Myopia?
Genetics: myopic parents
Environment: less time outdoors, extended reading and use of electronic devices.
Peripheral Hyperopia: routine correction continually moves the images behind the retina, which may constantly signal the eye to grow.
Myopia is a growing problem; it has increased 66% in the past 30 years so that 42% of people 12-54-year old are myopic. Research is showing that new types of contact lenses can slow or prevent the progression of myopia. The contact lenses work by regulating the peripheral hyperopia defocus with a type of center distance multifocal design. Studies show children wearing this type of multifocal contact lens had 25% less myopia progression and 31% less axial elongation than those wearing conventional contacts over 2 years. Myopia is permanent therefore these lenses work best the younger a patient is started, usually 9-15 years of age.
